Super Antispyware free licence giveaway!!!

27 October 2009

Spyware is a nuisance that can slow a computer down and even cause it to stop working properly.

SuperAntiSpyware.com is one of my favourite antispyware programs for the PC that can protect your computer from these types of infections – whether you are using Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7.

They also have an online scanner for those unable to install the software due to infection.

I would like to thank Mike Duncan who has offered to giveaway five lifetime licences each worth $39.90

To win a licence, all you need to do is to install the free edition from here and then answer three simple questions listed below – the answer to question 1 can be found after installing the software and the answers to questions 2 and 3 can be found on the website.

Please email me the answers with superantispyware in the subject (email address can be found on my website or just send me a comment on this blog and I will email it to you).

The five winners will be chosen at random on or just after Monday 9th November 2009 and Mike Duncan will email you the licence code.

The questions are:

1. In the free version what is the title of the weblink on the bottom left?

2. Who is the founder of superantispyware?

3. How many downloads/users have SuperAntiSpyware had worldwide?

Good luck!

Mac Mail – deleting an email address from Mac Mail

25 October 2009

Tip

For those using Mac Mail, please be careful when deleting an old email address – it will permanently delete ALL the emails associated with it. The best thing to do is simply to keep the email address in the system but render it inactive.

If you do delete the email accidentally and you do not have a backup in place like Time Machine or Carbonite, you will need a data recover software like File Salvage or Data Rescue.

The fact that Mac Mail behaves this is totally insane in my opinion. No other email program I know behaves in such a way and I have recently left Apple feedback about this.

Windows Genuine Advantage

Tip

If your Windows XP starts up asking you to install Windows Genuine Advantage and you always click “Cancel”, the simply way to stop the message appearing on start-up is to go to Control Panel and remove it from “Scheduled Tasks”

DVD/CD drive is missing with error code 39

25 October 2009

Today I experienced this error on two different machines – both XP.

The CD/DVD drives were missing from “My Computer” and a visit to device manager would show both drives with a yellow exclamation mark and error 39.

This problem results from minor driver corruption and the solution is simple and explained clearly here

In summary you need to delete the value of Lower and Upper filters within the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SYSTEM, CurrentControlSet, Control, Class, {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

The restart the computer and the CD/DVD drives will reappear.

I also experienced a similar issue with a realtec sound card and the solution was identical.

Also Microsoft offer an automated solution here.

Spam mail – no free prizes!!!

25 October 2009

Getting emails promising you free money or laptops is a regular occurrence these days – but do you ever see the free prize? mostly not.

The only people benefiting from these emails are spammers – eventually after a large number of forwarding, a spammer will receive an email with anything from 100-1000 email addresses – this is worth a lot of money to them!

An thanks to your friend who sent you the email out of consideration that they and you might win a laptop, the only freebie you will receive is more junk mai.

So next time you are sent an email about a free Ericsson R320 laptop or some money from Bill Gates, do not forward this on to eight people or eighty people. First use Google to check if the email is genuine and most times you will see it to be reported as a hoax.

Some site that specialise in hoax emails are:

Media player 11 without sound

25 October 2009

Recently I was working on an XP system that would not play any sound in media player. Sound was working for all other things, so this was very confusing.

All searches on the internet suggested that it was a codec issue, but in the unusual and particular case it was something completely different.

The machine had TWO sound cards and media player was sending sound to the wrong card. In this case the second sound card was a USB adapter with a headset.

To change sound card that media player uses, simply click “Tools”, “Options”, “Devices” and change the speakers to the other sound card available.

Dangerous spam mails

25 October 2009

Earlier this week, a client emailed me a copy of an email that seemed to come from Microsoft asking him to install an update for Outlook Express. The client was wondering if he should install the update.

The answer was “NO” – the email was a complete fake and led to a link that would install spyware on the computer.

Microsoft will NEVER email individuals with software updates.

The text of the email in question is pasted below – stay well clear!!!

Welcome Windows 7

23 October 2009

Windows 7 was released yesterday.

If you are thinking of getting a windows 7 system, I would wait a few weeks while more laptops/desktops are released with the new operating system.

I also predict that many vista systems out there will plummet in price now, so if you are looking for a bargain I am sure there will be plenty.

AVG 9 – new version out

21 October 2009

AVG have now released version 9 which can be downloaded here

It have a new look and feel and I notice a feature to improve scanning speed.

Well worth upgrading if you are on version 8.5.

Say no to 0870 numbers and free call 0800 from mobile

8 October 2009

Here are two money saving tips relating to phone calls:

0870 numbers are a complete con. They are very expensive to call from both landlines and mobiles.

For more information have a look at moneysavingsexpert.com.

The best form of action is to avoid dialing 0870 numbers when you can – try to dial a number published for overseas callers and otherwise try this great site to SAYNOTO0870 which will give you alternative numbers to call for all major companies.

Another con is that 0800 numbers are not free calls from mobile phones – in fact they are pretty expensive to dial!

A great new service is 0800 Buster which gives you a regular landline number to call from your mobile. Save this number in your mobile phonebook and then just dial the 0800 number after the service answers your call.
